There’s an App for That . . . at CRA

CRA is saying “Happy New Year” by launching two new mobile apps: one for individuals and one for businesses. Taxpayers and their advisors may want to check them out.
Individual taxpayers can now securely view certain information from their MyAccount data on a mobile app called MyCRA; for example, their notice of assessment, and RRSP and TFSA contribution room are all accessible to them on the go. They can also find out the status of their tax return – just how long that refund is going to take, and information about their social benefits and tax credits.

The Business Tax Reminders mobile app is for the use of small to medium-sized businesses with annual revenues of $20 million or less and fewer than 500 employees. It allows businesses to create their own custom reminders for important CRA due dates, such as when to make instalment payments, make remittances, prepare returns and add their personal business deadlines. Calendar or pop-up messages will appear.

So who will see your specific business deadlines? According to CRA, only you. This is a stand-alone service that “will not interact in any way with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) or other government systems.” This app is not connected in any way with My Business Account, which is CRA’s secure online portal for business accounts such as the GST/HST (except Revenue Quebec), payroll, corporate and excise tax, excise duties and so on. All information gathered to use this service is secured through the personal security settings on your mobile device. However, CRA will be able to determine the number of downloads from the download count that is available through the Google Play (Android), BlackBerry, and iTunes (Apple) websites.
