Tax Filing Season Begins, and Other Notable Milestones Coming Soon!

The tax filing season officially opened on February 21 for e-filing 2021 returns, while February 28, 2022 will be the opening day for filing T3 returns electronically. The deadline for most Canadian filers is Monday, May 2 as April 30 falls on the weekend this year. As pros in the tax, accounting and financial services industries gear up for a busy season, there are other important tax filing and investment planning milestones to take note of, too. Here’s a handy checklist to share with your staff and clients:
February:
- Feb 1: Retroactive claims for Canada Emergency Sickness and Caregiving Benefits can be made for Periods 65 forward
- Feb 1: Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit (CWLB) – retro claims for Periods 9 (Dec 19 start) to Period 17 (Feb 19) still available
- Feb 5: Claim for Canada Recovery Sickness and Caregiving Benefits Period 71
- Feb 12: Claim for Canada Recovery Sickness and Caregiving Benefits Period 72
- Feb 18: CCB Payment
- Feb 19:Claim for Canada Recovery Sickness and Caregiving Benefits Period 73
- Feb 20: Claim for Canada Recovery Sickness and Caregiving Benefits Period 74 and CWLB Period 18
- Feb 24: Apply, amend or increase CERS, CEWS and CRHP claims for Aug 1 to Aug 28, 2021 (CERS Per. 12, CEWS & CRHP Per.19)
- Feb 27: Claim for Canada Recovery Sickness and Caregiving Benefits Period 75 and CWLB Period 19
- Feb 28: T4, T4A, T5 Slip filing deadline, receive enrollment notice if RRSP LLP withdrawal made in the prior year
- Assemble self-reported casual income from tips, casual employment, no-slip interest income, receipts for discretionary deductions and credits

- March 1: RRSP contribution deadline,
- March 6: Claim for Canada Recovery Sickness and Caregiving Benefits Period 76 and CWLB Period 20
- March 2: Reconciliation deadline for claiming child care
- March 12: Claim for Canada Recovery Sickness and Caregiving Benefits Period 77 and CWLB Period 21
- March 15: quarterly tax instalment deadline
- March 18: CCB Payment

- March 31: Tax filing due date for trusts with Dec. 31 year end, T3 slips due, File Form T1-OVP for Excess RRSP, PRPP, SPP Contributions

- Apr 24:Claim for Canada Recovery Sickness and Caregiving Benefits Period 83 and CWLB Period 27
- April 30: Normal T1 individual tax filing deadline, but this year on a Saturday – so May 2 PLUS
- Deadline: interest relief ends on taxes due on 2020 T1 for pandemic support recipients with taxable income under $75,000; interest will be charged after this date.
- Form T1135, Foreign Income Verification Statement
- T1ADJ - Late elections for pension income splitting for 2018 expire April 30, 2022
- T400A: Notice of Objection File on the later of one year after filing due date or 90 days after receipt of Notice of Assessment or Reassessment or Determination
