Moving Expenses Can Be Claimed

Claiming moving expenses on your tax return can be very lucrative so be sure to fill out form T1-M if you moved at least 40 km closer, within Canada, to a new work location, or place of self-employment.

Qualifying income for these purposes does not include investment income or employment insurance benefits. Eligible expenses include the costs of selling your home including real estate commissions and up to a maximum of $5000 for the costs of keeping a vacant residence while trying to sell it. Removal, storage, and transportation costs count, too. Keep all receipts; this claim is often audited.
