Leadership Discussion: What’s Your Stance on Legalized Workplace Cannabis Use?

Cannabis is already on the mind of tax and financial advisors due to its inclusion in Budget 2018 and its pending legalization and accompanying taxation. But that isn’t all you should be thinking about, as it triggers an essential and controversial leadership discussion – what’s tolerable in the workplace?

Weigh in on this conversation in the Executive Business Builder Network.

Executive Business Builder Network member Alan Rowell posed the following question to members:

“With the pending legalization of marijuana in Canada, I'm interested in business owners’ views regarding employment policies and/or conditions of employment regarding the use of a legal substance. While we all know that you cannot show up to work with too many drinks in your system, what's the policy regarding marijuana? At what point is the employee unable to perform their duties? Is there an issue with "odor" even if not inebriated in the workplace?
Lastly and perhaps the most important, do conditions of employment that restrict use during business hours violate any employee rights? This potential problem may seem like a long way away, but it's not really…”

Alan is right; the legalization of marijuana is one of those new and thorny issues leaders from all sides of society will soon face. The foundation has been set; Bill C-45 is now sitting before the Senate, and Finance Minister Morneau addressed taxation in Budget 2018. A controversial subject, but it’s an outside influence that has the potential to impact your business and it must be addressed nonetheless.

Jenifer Bartman (course author in the Executive Business Builder Program) emphasized to us recently that being an effective leader means making tough choices while adapting to and addressing new challenges that society’s changes pose on your business. The responsibility of leadership is a tall and noble task, and individuals often feel alone in their decision-making, especially when managing difficult relationship issues – but you don’t have to.
