Year-end tax planning, owner manager compensation, business transition planning and more were covered over the last few days at the fall Distinguished Advisor Workshop (DAW).
Knowledge Bureau president Evelyn Jacks and faculty members Jenifer Bartman and Larry Frostiak travelled across Canada together, tackling the topics advisors and financial planners are talking about.
Held October 27 – November 2 in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto, more than 150 participants attended the workshops, held by Knowledge Bureau and sponsored nationally by Liberty Tax, Intuit and TaxCycle, and regionally by Farber Financial Group.
“Our DAW speaking tour was a great experience,” said Jenifer Bartman.
“Not only did we have lots of participation at every stop, the sessions provided a forum for sharing ideas and experiences. If you haven't attended a DAW event before, be sure to catch us on the next tour in a city near you!”
Dawn Miller, who attended the Vancouver workshop, said the topic selections came from a good point of view and she appreciated the speakers’ enthusiasm.
Maureen Carse, also from Vancouver, stated the RESP rules and child care expenses were the top two items she learned at the workshop.
Attending in Calgary, Cathy Losing stated it was “very appealing to learn the actual basics of business planning.”
The top three takeaways from Keith Davis, also from Calgary: don’t micro manage, delegate and don’t do everything.
Attendee Don Strankman said the workshop was an “excellent perspective on what to look for in a business and how to help a client understand their business.”
Doug Buss commented there “should be 100-plus advisors” at the workshop.
In Toronto, many of the attendees made similar statements. Gaetan Ladouceur stated the sessions were informative, fun and comprehensive. His key takeaway was “consulting with clients before the end of the year.”
Diane Elliott, attendee and Knowledge Bureau faculty member, stated there was “so much great info and definitely timely for her business right now.” She said the most valuable business building idea takeaway was “tips for hiring the right person for the business”
