In some countries, such as the United States, taxation is based on citizenship. In Canada, however, the government levies income taxes based on residency.
As a general rule, residents of Canada are taxed on their world income in Canadian dollars. Therefore you will be subject to penalties if you fail to report foreign income on your Canadian return.
Where income is taxed in more than one jurisdiction, tax treaties have been worked out so that credit is given for taxes already paid to the foreign jurisdiction. If you were subject to withholding taxes in a foreign country, be sure to claim a foreign tax credit on your Canadian tax return.
