Fight with the neighbor? An ex-partner? There are tax reasons to make up and repair burnt bridges: tax snitching can be nasty.
The mandate of the CRA’s Informant Leads Program is to coordinate all leads that the CRA receives from informants. The tax department uses the information to determine if there is an element of non-compliance with tax legislation. That information is then reviewed to determine which compliance program will be appropriate for enforcement action. . .there is even a financial rewards program for those who tell on international tax evaders.
Good way to protect yourself? The Voluntary Disclosures Program is a great weapon against nasty enemies. Tell CRA about errors or omissions before they come and tell you.
