Build a Business, Eliminate Job Dissatisfaction

Attaining work-life balance and overall job satisfaction seems out of reach for a percentage of Canadians, according to Statistics Canada. Embracing new opportunities for personal and professional development is the key to reaching these goals.

In the 2016 report titled “Life in the Fast Lane: How Canadians are Managing,” Statistics Canada outlined that the number of Canadians satisfied with their work-life balance has declined 10 percentage points over the past decade.

In 2008, 78 percent of individuals surveyed indicated that they were happy with the way they managed to balance work, family responsibilities, leisure, and technology. By 2016, the number had dropped to 68 percent, and some respondents cited that technology is in part to blame due to the constant connectivity and accessibility it offers.

One in five working Canadians also admits that the demands of their job infringe upon their family time.

The data, taken from the 2016 General Social Survey “Canadians at Work and at Home” also indicates that 6 percent of employed Canadians are very dissatisfied with their jobs, and a large percentage of these individuals blame the workplace for their dissatisfaction.

What factors contribute to workplace discontent? Location (commute to the office), the people and the availability of necessary resources for job success are common complaints.  These are important clues for employers who have difficulty retaining staff.

What do these numbers mean, and what’s the solution?   Overall, it seems a large percentage of Canadians are happy at work and satisfied with the way their job responsibilities integrate into the rest of their lives, which is positive for the nation’s economic growth and development.

However, those that fall into the dissatisfied category struggle with a career or life that isn’t fulfilling to them.

Personal and professional development are key to breaking out of this type of stagnation. Self-employment is on the rise, providing individuals with the opportunity to set their own schedule, determine which clients and employees they’d like to work with, obtain the resources they need to do their jobs effectively, and the ability to design their own workspace—all of which leads to increased job satisfaction and achieving an improved work-life balance.

Even with the benefits, there’s no question that taking the leap from traditional employment to self-employment can be intimidating, and it’s not for everyone.
