Find Success Through In-Demand Job Opportunities: Start Your Tax Preparation Career

Looking for a career-building “back-to-school” project? Knowledge Bureau has developed a new introductory tax course

so that anyone — even beginners with no previous experience preparing returns for others — can learn the art of personal tax preparation as a prerequisite to understanding family wealth management.

The qualified tax preparer can be found anywhere — doing returns for family and friends or working in banks, accounting offices, commercial tax preparation firms or independent financial advisory offices. That person, in fact, is often the very first financial professional that most people encounter and so has an important and evolving role in helping Canadians understand their tax system, the refundable and non-refundable tax credits that will increase their after-tax cash flow and, ultimately, influencing how, where and when they invest their money for their future.

Introduction to Personal Tax Preparation provides the student with a solid foundation in, and understanding of, personal taxation in Canada for low- and middle-income taxpayers, including single employees, students, young families, retirees and investors. The successful graduate will gain the skills to prepare basic tax returns professionally, with a high degree of confidence.

The course begins with an introduction to income tax in Canada: who is taxed and what is subject to income tax. By the end of the first chapter, students will be able to prepare a simple tax return for a no-income credit filer.

Students learn how to prepare 2016 tax returns by completing case studies using professional tax preparation software. For those who don’t already have their own software, student versions of TaxCycle T1, ProFile T1, and DT Max T1 software are provided. Scenarios involving 2017 returns will be completed using the Income Tax Estimator from the Knowledge Bureau Toolkit.

Along the way, students will also learn about the most common deductions and credits available to Canadian taxpayers.
