Distinguished Advisor Workshops Focus on Tax Strategies for HNW Clients

Especially for experienced tax and financial advisors, unique planning opportunities with Canada’s top experts will provide 10 CE/CPD Credits and access to 2015 tax calculators.

Tax year 2015 is significant for reforms in the areas of personal and corporate tax, and estate planning; with the October 19 election just over a month away, Canada’s top experts will discuss year-end planning strategies as well as consequences of the vote, at Knowledge Bureau’s Distinguished Advisor Workshops in four cities across the country: October 27 in Winnipeg, October 28 in Vancouver, October 29 in Calgary and November 2 in Toronto

“The opportunities for family income splitting, retirement income and business exit planning are on the detailed agenda, and of interest to experienced tax and financial advisors,” says Evelyn Jacks, President of Knowledge Bureau, who will discuss the outcome of the election and its anticipated effect on personal tax planning in 2016 and beyond.

Failure to anticipate and integrate new tax planning options can cloud the future net values of the business and family wealth in general. For these reasons, special guest Larry Frostiak, FCA, CFP, TEP, will present an advanced practitioner’s update. He will focus on strategies that affect family compensation planning, use of corporate wealth in holdcos, how to extract corporate surpluses, the efficient use of RDTOH, family trusts and the sale of business assets. Shares vs assets, restrictive covenants, reserves, and financing issues will be covered, as well as strategies for wills and exit planning: The Capital Gains Deduction, CNIL, ABIL's, using pipeline strategies.

Jenifer Bartman, CA, CMC, is an expert at mitigating risk to business equity. She will discuss sound financial planning for the business itself. She is the lead instructor and author of four certificate courses in the Knowledge Bureau MFA Designation Program in succession and business planning. She will focus on business readiness for succession, including financing, financial analysis, and executive coaching.

Keynotes from outstanding National and Regional Sponsors will round out advanced discussions on building a firm for the future, including financing, new technology, digital marketing and how to keep your practice relevant. Delegates will reflect with their peers on the “one big thing” that they can do to help their clients and themselves build independent, vital and “ever-exit-ready” enterprises.

“High net worth families and business owners are counting on their advisors for help in accumulating, growing and sustaining wealth, while planning for the independence of the business and the people managing it,” says Jacks. “These workshops will update you on the most recent strategies from Canada’s top experts, to ensure you can take the lead in posing and answering critical questions your clients need answers to.”

THE ISSUES:  There are over a million small businesses, which account for almost 78% of all private jobs created in Canada and 70% of the total labor force1;  and they are flourishing. But in 2015, almost 50% of all small- and medium-sized business owners are between 54 and 68 years of age and over 77% of them have more than 10 years of experience.

They are planning for succession, often finding that it is more difficult than they thought to find and train their successors. And, because they will not be passing “start-ups” to their successors, but vibrant small- to medium-sized businesses poised to grow, it means they are working harder and longer than they wanted to.

Further, recent changes to personal, corporate and trust tax laws provide the impetus for year-end tax planning opportunities that experienced advisors in the tax and financial services industry who serve this market must know.
