October-November 2025 Poll

Do you believe SimpleFile, CRA’s newly revamped automated tax system, will help more Canadians access tax benefits and comply with the tax system?

I’ve worked with the CVITP program for many years. It’s a great idea, in theory but the problem will be that rent or property taxes will not be known. For low income residents they will miss out on the monthly Ontario trillium benefits which is a big part of filing their return.

If CRA agents are giving out incorrect information 83% of the time, how can they expect us to have confidence in them filing returns.  Also, in my experience, the taxpayers who rely on government benefits are generally lower income earners who either receive refunds or have no balance owed.  They are the first ones in my office each year.  So no, I don’t think it will do anything for compliance.  The ones not filing usually aren’t filing for a reason.  I don’t believe SimpleFile will entice them to do so.

This will not be a big help to anyone, except maybe, the CRA itself.  As was mentioned before, there will likely be more errors and omissions because the CRA people do not seem to be trained at all and rarely know how to apply tax laws.  Also, and don’t forget, the government usually messes up almost anything they touch so expecting anything to be “improved” by them is likely a pie in the sky yearning.

I think that there will be a problem with missed deductions because the people with lower incomes don’t know what they can deduct. This will result in higher taxes being paid by low income people.

I think this could be beneficial… but feel it will be strife with problems. Those being targeted for the simplefile are the same ones who cant authenticate their online account because they can’t verify themselves. They’ve changed banks, changed address or don’t even know their social insurance number. Tax preparation as a profession is going to change to tax adjuster. I wait for the the day the 90 year old lady with the deceased husband comes in with 100 pages of medical receipts say CRA didn’t claim any of this.

There maybe slips, claims such as rent and disability tax credits (which is transferable if not needed by the person) which may be missed or not claimed.

Changes made by the CRA often benefit the CRA more than it does Canadian taxpayers. The Simple File System will create a lot of errors and unintended omissions.

The government offers free tax clinics,  phone in tax service and tax packages mailed out to individuals for years now. This new service is another approach to assist the lower income tax payer, seniors,  and or individuals with disabilities to file their taxes so no benefits and or credits are missed.

My concern is: the new system is invitation based only, and invitations were sent out earlier this 2025 summer and year to file in 2026. Tax payers need to keep the invitation as it holds key information to proceed with tax filing. This may sounds like a simple task but it may not be simple for many people.

If it works it will be a big help to tax payers who really depend on the benefits and credits each month.

in my 15+ Years of business people are comfortable dealing with a person—bet it Direct deposit request, or filing it through telephone banking (started during covid) or volunteer tax centers——- cra keeps forgetting these people need social contact—- they are already ignored and are asked to be on their own

CRA’s attempt to make things easier with this simplefile is just a way for CRA to get more money.  When one does not have a real person doing the actual tax return there is lots of room for error.

CRA can’t get anything right. Since the Change to the new Digital System, we have had more of the same clients being audited/reviewed for the same thing / donations, medical expenses for three year period (2021,2022,2023,2024)when the documents are exact to the penny for each year reviewed!  Anything to try to get money from the taxpayers.  Very frustrating for the clients.

There will always be people who don’t have a digital phone for the numbers, don’t feel comfortable talking on the phone or to people they don’t know, English/French is not their language so need an interpreter or someone to actually read their paperwork.
