He is currently serving at McMaster University as Special Advisor to the President, following almost seven years as Dean at the DeGroote School of Business. During his Deanship, The School received accreditation by AACSB – the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, developed four new master’s degree programs (the first new degrees in 25 years!), almost tripled enrolment in the MBA program, and tripled enrolment in doctoral studies. In particular, during his time as Dean, Paul led the planning, development and establishment of DeGroote’s Ron Joyce Centre in Burlington. This $28 million, state-of-the art facility is home to DeGroote’s MBA and executive programs and is a hub for academic and economic collaboration in the City of Burlington and the Halton Region.

As a former Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, he was awarded an Outstanding Teacher Award in 2003 and again in 2004. Bates recently completed a second edition of his best-selling book, Sales Force Management in the Financial Services. Following service on the boards of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Canadian Investment Dealers Association, in 2003 Bates was appointed as a part-time commissioner to the Ontario Securities Commission; he completed his second and final term on June 10th 2009. He also chairs the Investor Education Fund and is a member of the OSC’s Investor Advisory Panel. Paul also serves as a Director for Evangel Hall Mission in Toronto.

Paul has held the president’s office at four major brokerage and investment firms, most recently at the helm of Charles Schwab Canada (later acquired by Bank of Nova Scotia). His experience includes executive management in established firms and also successful “de novo” star-ups.

In 2000, he was chosen as the Most Influential Broker of the Year by Investment Executive Magazine. In 2002, Bates was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for community service.

In January 2008 Paul was appointed to a three year term to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Now in his second term he is chair of SSHRC’s Program and Quality Committee.

Paul calculates that he has run the circumference of the planet, including the completion of ten marathons and the Hamilton Around-the-Bay road race. An experienced sailor, he now lives on an equestrian farm with Sally, his wife of forty-three years, and many farm animals!

Michael R. Graham

B. Comm. Ph. D.

In a career spanning 50 years, Michael Graham has held senior research, strategy and sales-support positions with major Canadian investment firms. In the late 1990s he set up his own investment counseling firm which became Heathbridge Graham Inc. and then Heathbridge Capital Management Ltd., of which he was chairman from 2000 to 2007. Currently, he is president of his own “late-career” counseling firm, Michael Graham Investment Services.

Before immigrating to Toronto and Canada in September 1962, Michael followed his postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration at the London School of Economics in 1959 with doctoral studies and a thesis on the financing of the South African gold mining industry that earned him a Ph.D. from the University of London (L.S.E.) in 1964.

In Canada, Dr. Graham was involved on the research side of the industry from its beginnings. In 1983, he was program chairman when the Financial Analysts Federation (now the CFA Institute) held its annual meeting in Toronto. In addition to his research and investment strategy investment commentator and spokesman for Canada, across North America, and around the world.

Current professional memberships include: the CFA Institute and of its previous associate, the International Society of Financial Analysts, of which he was an original member: The Ticker Club of Toronto (of which he was president in 1994-1995); and the Third Thursday Group of New York (1973 to date, still the lone Canadian). Other memberships include The National Club, Toronto and the Toronto Cricket Skating & Curling Club of which he was president in 2003.

Dr. Graham contributes to Canadian financial publications, as well as being a still-frequent guest on Canadian television and radio. His two co-authored books – most recently Financial First Aid for Canadian Investors, published in 2008 – were aimed at preparing investors for the unexpected in what he also sees as a world of extraordinary investment opportunity.

Michael and his wife Nancy have three children: Julia—a lawyer practicing in Bristol-London, England; Richard—a senior wealth advisor in Vancouver; and Hugh—a sub-editor and freelance writer in London.

In his current capacity Michael presents, writes, refers and consults to investors and professionals of all types, this in an era when he is more convinced than ever about Canada’s potential as an exceptional worldwide place for investment.

He has provided leadership at Wood Gundy, Dominion Securities Ames/Pitfield, Merrill Lynch Canada and Midland Walwyn, Michael looks back with particular pride on the  number of exceptional groundbreaking Canadian corporate and investment banking deals he was privileged to have been involved in.

In a career that has brought extensive international work and travel, there were also Michael’s volunteer commitments with the International Federation of Multiple Sclerosis Societies (1973-1993), where he served terms as Treasurer, Chair of International Development and Senior Vice President; and Goodenough College (1988-2004), a residential postgraduate university in London England where he was proud to be the longstanding Canadian representative on the trust’s board of governors.

If Dr. Graham takes an overriding pride, it is in his committed and continuing role as an ambassador.
